This is how it goes: the girl says ah,
the boy imagines he can win her one,
and there, with faces pressed against the glass,
her faith in his perfection is undone:
for after a time the time shows on her face
though, gladiator, he might stay forever
hoping his skill at judging depth and place
will win the toy already bought twice over -
only to watch the bear be pawed and dropped
as gently as a summer fall of snow;
the crane arrive limp-wristed at the top
as though the crane-claw has no muscle tone.

to look for something she's allowed to scoff.
